Piasau Post - Issue 123
5 september 2008
Dear Parents
I have thoroughly enjoyed my first week at Piasau School, meeting so many parents and all your children. On Monday we held a whole school assembly. It gave me the opportunity to introduce myself and all the new teachers to the children. Over the week everyone has been so busy, getting to know the children and starting off their International Primary Curriculum (IPC) topics. I was invited to the beach with P3 who were looking for living things, to a rainforest with P4 and then up, up and away with P1 and that was all on one day! As always our starting culture topic for the half term will be centred on Malaysia, so the display board by the “old” entrance will follow that theme.
I look forward to meeting you at the events coming up soon and listed below. In the meantime our door is open.

School board vacancy
Many thanks to Niki Doran for serving on the school board over the past couple of years. As her term of office has now come to an end we need someone to take over from her to represent parents at the school board meetings. The School Board is responsible for the general management of the school and meets at least once a term. They make decisions on such areas as staffing, finance, building and curriculum. The parent representative also attends the open meeting offered by the PTA. If you are interested in becoming the next parent representative, please let Linda know in the office. There will be an election if we have more than 2 parents interested. Niki is quite willing to talk to anyone about the role she undertook.
Closure days
Please note that school will remain open next week for the full 5 days, Monday to Friday!
Hats and shoes
Well done to all those children who have remembered to bring their sun hats and to wear sensible shoes for playing on the adventure playground! We take sun safety very seriously at school and have a NO HAT NO PLAY – NO FUN TODAY policy. It is also important that children wear clothing that covers their shoulders. Children need to wear shoes that fit snugly to their feet and that do not slip off whilst playing in the playground area.
Cycling
I am delighted to see so many children walking or cycling to school. Well done! At the start of term it is always good to remind ourselves of the system in place to keep all children safe. So could you take a few minutes to remind your child to dismount when he/she reaches the yellow stripes on the pavement outside school and then, from there, the bicycles should be pushed! The same applies on the way out. Most of our children do this already but some might need reminding!
Dropping children off at school
We now have two entrance points to school which have been causing a few problems in the mornings with some children being dropped off by the new gate and getting out of their cars into the on coming traffic or trying to cross the road just opposite the new entrance where there is no crossing patrol. To simplify the system and also to ensure our children arrive safely, from Monday all children will come into school using the “old” gate near the “old” main entrance to school. Then if children’s classrooms are in the new building they should walk on the path through the cycle store and then behind the AV room into their classrooms. Could I also remind parents to use the parking bays as parking next to the school means your child is dismounting onto the road. I thank you for your co-operation.
Handrail
Please be informed that another handrail has been ordered for the staircases up to the new classrooms. Children have been very good at going up and down the staircases in single file! We are also waiting for a handrail to be put on the new stairs to the AV room.
Meet the Teachers -Tuesday 16th September
