Admission Policy

Aims

Piasau School’s aim is to ensure that all children are given the opportunity and environment to help them learn to their full potential. The school offers a broad based learning focused curriculum within a friendly, international and caring community, striving to fulfil the academic, linguistic, physical and social potential of each child.

Admittance of children 

The purpose of the school is to provide primary phase education for children of:

  • Shell expatriate (SM-EP) and UIA regional staff
  • Petronas Operating Subsidiary companies (for example PCSB)
  • Short Term Direct Hire (STC) by SM-EP/UIA and Petronas subsidiary (e.g. PCSB)

Further admittance will be given to key skill workers for contractors to Shell/Petronas. In the case of key skill workers, the following criterion will apply:

1. The contractors must be from the "hot skills" e.g. - surface engineering, subsurface and well engineering.
2. The admission of the children will be based on entry exams.
3. There must be strong recommendations from the business.
4. Duration of stay in the school would be only until the opening of an International School in Miri
5. Third party fees / rates will apply.
6. There must be availability of space at the school, based on date of birth.

No other children will be admitted unless the SM-EP HR department grant approval.

Fees payable

Part time (Nursery)            RM 6 000 per term (or part there of)
Full Time                        RM 12 000 per term (or part there of)

The fees will be set by the HR department and reviewed each year. Fees and deposit are charged for all pupils with the exception of SM-EP /UIA. The fees are based on a cost-recovery formula, not on a profit basis.

A deposit equal to the cost of one term will be required when a child starts at the school. The deposit will be used for the final term’s payment or refunded when the child/ren leave.

All fees, including the deposit when the child starts, must be paid within 5 working days of receipt of the debit note. Failure to pay the fees will result in the withdrawal of the place given to the child.  The held deposit will be used for the unpaid term.

Should a child join or leave the school part way through a term, the full term’s fees will be payable.

Payment method

All fee paying parents from companies that have not registered previously with Shell, will need to fill out a “Customer Registration form” to set up an account with Shell’s Finance Department in Kuala Lumpur. Once this has been done, a debit note will be sent to parents at the start of each term. Fees and deposit must be paid either by cheque addressed to “Sarawak Shell Berhad” and handed to the School Secretary or through Internet banking. All bank charges shall be borne by the remitter.

Curriculum, date of entry and class sizes

The curriculum followed is based on the English National Curriculum and International Primary Curriculum. The medium of language is English. The school admits pupils up to and including Primary 8 (twelve year olds – the children have to leave Piasau School at the end of the academic year they turn 12 years old). 

Children enter school:

  • At the start of the September Term if they are 4 by the end of the following February.
  • At the start of the January Term if they are 4 by the end of the following August.

Piasau School does not have the facilities or staff to work with children that have a special educational need. All children must be able to cope with their daily lessons being taught in English from their first day of admission.  The decision of the SM-EP HR department will be final.
